Along came Miss Wuzie . . .
Miss Wuzie

I drove to the South Central Shelter to pick up little Miss Wuzie on Friday, December 28, 2001.
I had heard about her from other dog rescuers, shelter scouts and volunteers on the internet and from various other people.

Miss Wuzie is a very special little lady.  She's 17 years old and is blind and deaf.  Her little tongue sometimes hangs out the right side of her mouth because she has also lost all 4 canines and several other teeth.  But she is otherwise a very healthy old gal.

Her previous owners had her for all those years and then took her to the shelter.

When I heard about this, my heart broke for her.  After giving love to her humans after that many years, I just could not understand how someone could take her to the shelter where she obviously would not be adopted, but rather she would be euthanized.  Owner turn-ins are the first to be put to sleep at shelters if they are not considered 'adoptable'.  This little lady is certainly considered "not adoptable".

I almost didn't get any sleep that night.  I got up and drove to the shelter early the next morning which was her first 'available' date.  I arrived at the shelter before the doors opened.

The shelter was keeping her in the room where the puppies are kept.  It didn't take me long to see that this old lady needed to have a home fast or she would most likely be put to sleep that very same day.

I took her home with me.  I probably will not find a home for her. As a matter of fact, I'm not even looking.  But Miss Wuzie can live out her last hours, days, months or years right here with me being kept warm, comfortable, clean and very well fed.
It's the very least this old lady deserves; a lot of love, a lap to sit on while she's getting lots of petting and caressing, and a dignified death when that time comes.

One of her favorite things to do is to take naps.  She's real good at it too!

Sadly, I must tell you that my little Miss Wuzie departed this world and is now waiting for me at Rainbow Bridge.
I will always miss her.
